Session 10. Thermal / Fire Retardant Composites
Session 10. Thermal/Fire Retardant Composites
Session Information and Topics
Thermal management composites have attracted much attention in the fields of electronic devices, human health, and energy-saving buildings, which are of importance to improve the quality of modern life and develop green, efficient and intelligent heat-related technologies and systems. The development of new fire-retardant composites and technologies is extremely important to people’s life, property safety, and economic growth. With the implementation of mandatory flame retardant regulations in many countries around the world, fire-retardant materials and technologies are of interest in academia and industrial circles for years. The session will focus on the following topics:
Thermal Interface Materials (TIMs) Thermally Conductive & Insulating Materials Thermal Energy Storage & Conversion Materials Heat Transfer Mechanisms Thermal Test & Characterization Methods Theoretical Simulations & Calculations |
Fire-Retardant Composites New Fire Retardants Fire Behaviors & Fire-Retardant Mechanism Fire-Retardant Fibers & Textiles Fire-retardant Plastics, Elastomers & Rubbers Fire-Retardant Coatings & Foams Toxicity, Smoke & the Environment

Session Chairs
Prof. Wei Yang
Sichuan University
Dr. Wei Yang is a professor of Polymer Materials and Engineering at Sichuan University (People's Republic of China). He studied polymer processing at Sichuan University where he earned his Ph.D. degree and was promoted to be associate professor (2006) and full professor (2011). His current research interests focus on processing-structure-performance relationship of polymer composites. He has coauthored some 250 research papers and book chapters and is the first inventor of more than 50 filed patents.
Co-Chairs
Prof. Xi Shen
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Dr. Shen is currently an assistant professor at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and serves as the programme leader of BEng (Hon) in Aviation Engineering. Before joining HK PolyU, he was a Humboldt research fellow at the Institute for Composite Materials in Kaiserslautern, Germany and a research assistant professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His research centers on the rational design of polymer nanocomposites from architected nanofillers with tailored multifunctional properties for emerging optical and thermal management applications. He has written one book chapter, more than 50 peer-reviewed journal papers in high-impact scientific journals, including Progress in Materials Science, Matter, Advanced Materials, Advanced Functional Materials, ACS Nano, Nano Letters. His contribution to the materials science and composites community has been recognized by numerous awards including Hong Kong PhD Fellowship (2011-2015), Humboldt Research Fellowship (2017-2018), Best Oral Presentation Award (ACCM-9, 2014), Tsai Award (ICCM-20, 2015), and Editor's Top Reviewer Award (Composites Part A, 2020).
Co-Chairs
